The NAIDOC Celebrations for 2013, fell within a school week this year enabling the school to be even more proactive in recognising the achievements and struggles of Australia’s Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.Reward Day (end of term 2) focused on building understanding of these cultures, and through the mediums of art and story, foster an awareness of, and deeper appreciation for our indigenous peoples. However, this year we were also able to join in with the Flag Raising Ceremony and luncheon in Sarina.Offered only to our indigenous students, we took time off class to attend the event. Having our students at the ceremony representing our school, and celebrating their heritage was very special. A very big ‘thankyou’ goes to Ms Astrid Sauney and the rest of the staff at Mudth-Niyleta Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Co-op (Miller House), who were very accommodating, and spent time instructing the children. Certainly an event to develop and foster. Thanks to the parents who helped out on the day - especially given the very tight timelines.
